Located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, ITC Royal Bengal is a 1.2 million sq. ft. luxury hotel that blends classical architectural traditions with modern hospitality standards. Designed in collaboration with WATG, Singapore, the project is LEED Platinum-certified and reinterprets a palatial urban retreat within the framework of a contemporary high-rise.
The project draws from Kolkata’s colonial-era architectural language while addressing the functional demands of a five-star hotel. The hotel offers 456 rooms and suites, including 82 serviced apartments, and supports seven restaurants, a spa, wellness areas, and extensive conferencing spaces. It also features an expansive 20,000 sq. ft. pillarless banquet hall.
Architecturally, the design draws from Baroque, Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, and colonial influences. Elements like Tuscan columns, pediments, arcades, and layered terraces structure the visual rhythm. The building’s massing offsets vertically as the levels rise, ensuring the form aligns with the design requirement of a Seismic Zone IV.
A formal landscaped forecourt leads into a double-height lobby detailed with stone, wood, and artisanal elements inspired by local craft traditions. Stone cladding at the base transitions into lighter vertical elements above, creating a strong visual hierarchy and grounding the building.
The project is integrated with sustainability features such as rainwater harvesting, low-VOC interior materials, and energy-efficient MEP systems. Indigenous planting, green roofs, and restored waterbodies reduce heat gain and increase site biodiversity. These measures are embedded into the design process, not applied post-facto, ensuring performance aligns with architectural intent.
ITC Royal Bengal achieves clarity in planning, formal coherence, and technical performance, demonstrating how large-scale hospitality can be both contextual and efficient. It is a benchmark for luxury hotels that prioritize legacy, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
