A vivid burst of colour and a mixture of classical and modern elements greets you as you enter the editorial and classifieds department of The Times of India, a highly influential newspaper in India and the largest circulating news daily in the world. The management’s brief to the architect was to shape an interior ambiance that showcased the paper’s eclectic news. The classifieds section that looks like a backdrop of an old palace has few indulgences of modernity. Russet stone, Rajasthani jharokhas, latticework panels and miniature paintings, leather upholstery, glass cabins and exposed white ducting are some of the features that highlight the design. The entrance lobby is accentuated by an intricately patterned jharokha and its seating in dark leather has carved supports. The gleaming granite flooring is embellished with black inlay work. Low level dividers that function as billboards for advertisements separate the entrance lobby from the classifieds office spaces. Executive offices are on the periphery and the other employees are housed in the central area with half partitions. The other side of the reception leads to a large conference hall and offices. The entrance lobby of the editorial department has laminated blow-ups of old newspapers on the walls. Emblems of The Times of India adorn its walls. The corridors have black newspaper racks with current editions. Its predominant colour palette is black, white with lilac accents. Huge art deco panels adorn the doors in the editorial section. The cream Jaisalmer marble flooring is inlaid with black Cuddapah patterns.
