Procter & Gamble, the world-renowned corporate giant’s Mumbai facility, with its white granite and glass facade, subtly stands out and verbalizes simplicity. Massive planar walls and concrete columns boldly articulate the building’s structure. The built mass is primarily rectilinear and has a huge mass of hollow cubic volume that serves as the entrance plaza. This 3-storey high entrance plaza is the most compelling element in the design. The mastery of its proportions and detailing of its wall planes is especially appealing. The severity of the clean lines and austere expression of the plaza is counterpoised by the play of landscape elements that are interspersed into the space. The visual line from the plaza to the internal atrium adds to aesthetic appeal of the architecture. Landscaped areas that surround the building and the large entrance plaza serve as a prelude to the building entrance. The interior spaces are again articulated with simple cubic volumes and straight planes accentuated with landscaped features. The 4-storey structure includes two basement levels. It has workspaces on the ground, 1st and 2nd-floor. The 3rd floor includes conference facilities, training areas, and canteen spaces. A suspended steel staircase with a sculptural appearance connects the 3rd and the 4th floor. The element of surprise that one encounters when one descends or ascends the stairs augments the experience of the space. The director and senior managerial areas manifest themselves on a block that tops the entrance plaza.
