The Infosys software development block in the Chinese metro of Shanghai challenges the pervasive glass and steel avant-garde that Chinese cities showcase today. The organic structure embraces a sustainable model, thereby redefining the realm of innovative architecture in terms of environmental and aesthetic values. It is situated in the Huan Dong business park, which has strict height restrictions. In an attempt to achieve a pioneering architecture within these limits, the architect has endeavoured to break preconceived notions about living spaces, structure and built form. The form of the building is indicative of an organic mountain and is swathed with a lush green cover. It is an idea that inspires the congruence of environment and development. Externally, the building is akin to a blooming green hill, with a few fragments of curving glass peeking through its rounded surface. The 25 mtr high structure has 3 storeys with an area of 63,174 sq mtr. Its architecture replicates the undulating nature of a mountain even in its elevation. Its organic plans pivot around three open to sky atriums. The atriums are proposed to include highly dense vegetation, which will create a cooler interior environment. The extent of the floor plates decrease as they ascend up, to accommodate the form. The atrium and the large skylights around the periphery ensure a structure that is naturally lit in 75 % of its area, achieving an energy efficient building.
