Proposed in Noida on the outskirts of the national capital New Delhi, the dimensions of the skyscraper at 710 mtr with 160 floors are truly staggering. Conceptually, the design derives its idea from the unique values of the Indian subcontinent – from its multi cultural, multi linguistic, multi religious diversity and the indomitable ever-present spirit of the Himalayas. The multi layered form of the building represents the diverse and rich cultural heritage of India. The soaring multiple towers with varying heights were inspired by the silhouette of the Himalayas. The development also aspires to showcase brand India to the world. The skyscraper is an icon of the rising economy, development and technological progress – an icon attained through a merger of the economic and the technological skills of a country. New York in the 30s, Malaysia in the 90s and China today all have used tall buildings to showcase their countries to the world. The Noida tower is a way to put emergent India on the global map. The towers will house office spaces in the first 100 levels in the nine modules around the central core. The top 50 floors will have an atrium hotel with an observation deck on the highest level. The tower will also have a convention centre for 15,000 people with a 3,000 seater auditorium in adjacent blocks. The 250 acre site is also set to include retail and entertainment facilities of 3,70,000 sq mtr. Retail and entertainment have been planned along the atrium streets of 600 mtr length. The traditional street will open into squares and include anchor stores and food courts. The mall will be divided into four geographical zones of the country and will represent their culture, architecture and food. Cultural events and festivals distinctive to the regions will be arranged in these areas. In addition, the City Centre will have major entertainment attractions such as laser lights, an artificial beach, ski-slopes and roller coaster rides. With the development of the project as a prime tourist attraction, it also proposes to have additional hotels with conference facilities. The design envisages corporate office buildings of varying heights along the main roads. The City Centre will be connected to the main arterial roads and the Delhi mass transit rail; its railway terminal will express a novel architectural imagery to complement the development. The Noida Development committee has approved the proposal. India has severe restrictions on building heights to limit the spread of tall buildings. But the Noida Development Authority has already agreed to change the local bylaws to get this project through the planning procedures.
