Bandra Fort, a 17th-century Portuguese watchtower overlooking the Arabian Sea, is defined by its robust laterite stone construction and thick defensive walls. The redevelopment of the fort’s plaza and surrounding landscape by Architect Hafeez Contractor sensitively frames this historic structure while reimagining its public realm as an active civic space.
The project reconfigures the existing amphitheatre, plazas, and pedestrian walkways to improve accessibility, comfort, and usability, while carefully preserving the fort’s architectural integrity and visual prominence. Spatial interventions are deliberately restrained, allowing the historic fabric to remain the focal point while encouraging community interaction and cultural engagement.
The landscape strategy builds upon existing on-site vegetation, supplementing it with curated planting of native species to strengthen local ecology and enhance urban green cover. Basalt hardscaping is employed to create durable, low-maintenance circulation paths capable of withstanding heavy monsoons and high footfall, while remaining visually rooted in the site’s material context.
Thoughtfully integrated lighting across walkways, plazas, and the amphitheatre ensures safety and usability after dusk, transforming the precinct into an inviting public environment for everyday use and cultural events. Together, these interventions reposition Bandra Fort as a contemporary civic landscape—one that balances heritage conservation with inclusive urban life.
