The all new look terminals 1B and 1C of the Mumbai Domestic Airport were designed using aluminium composite panels, glass roofs and large skylights. Terminal 1C, which was entirely newly built, was placed between terminals 1A and 1B which were modernised. A five star hotel adjacent to T1C was part of this upgradation process. The column free check-in areas of 1B and 1C are 230 mtr and 275 mtr in length and 21 mtr and 22 mtr in width respectively. 1B includes 81 check-in counters while 1C has a 4000 sq mtr security hold area with 6 new boarding bridges and 2 new baggage handling belts. An extended mezzanine floor of 591 sq mtr oversees the departure lounge of terminal 1C housing the food courts. The connection from T1A to T1C was created after puncturing the existing gable end. This allows passengers to check into T1B and take the flight from T1B departure hold area through newly built boarding bridges. In terminal 1B the skylight was created after cutting existing reinforced concrete slabs, beams and columns. It warrants natural light into the spaces and thereby is an energy efficient design. The area between the entrance canopy and the main building has an attractively landscaped garden. With a total built up area of 5,00,000 sq ft spread over 30 acres, this project was a challenge to execute as alterations were made on a fully functional airport and flight and ground operations had to be shifted from time to time in order to carry out the modernisation. The General Aviation (G A) terminal for chartered flights was also redesigned and transformed into a swanky lounge for the VIP passengers. The entrance is from Kalina area of eastern Mumbai. The older shed like structure is now a plush 650 sq mtr private airport with facilities like an immigration office, customs department, conference room, pilot briefing area, a bar and a rest room. The first floor houses offices for these chartered flights. The new five star hotel within the airport land adjoining T1C has a built up area of around 4,50,000 sq ft. It is 8 storeys tall, with 300 guest rooms and a car park area connecting to the underground parking lot of the domestic airport. This luxurious hotel has a glass and steel frame with large skylights and view of the runways.
